Journey with us through the season of Lent as we read scriptures and reflect on the text each day until Easter. Daily devotionals have been written by the pastors and ministry leaders to help guide you through this season. These devotionals are a collaboration between the campuses of First Methodist Church of Waco and Austin Avenue United Methodist Church.
The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism.
Lent was also a time when restoration to the fellowship of the Church was extended to those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful. Reconciliation was gained through penitence and forgiveness. The whole congregation was reminded of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent by:
self-examination and repentance;
prayer, fasting, and self-denial;
reading and meditating on God's holy Word.
It is our prayer that this devotional guide will help you grow in your discipleship through this important and holy season.
