Father's Day is just a few days away. As a pastor, I always try to speak special words to Mothers. I'm gentle, joyful, and honoring. However, when I speak to Fathers and in particular men, I'm always more direct and challenging. Since I'm a man and a Father I feel I have that privilege as a pastor.
Our theme as a Congregation at First Methodist Waco is "Family First." Whether a person who attends or joins the church I pastor is single or parat of a large family, our church is a family and "Family First" is a good reminder that we are all part of God's larger family. We are part of a family that will outlast our earthly and physical family. We are one in Christ and we acknowledge that when people join our church they are not joining a church roll or a pledge campaign, they are joining our family. My message Sunday will be "How to be a Godly Grownup" and I look forward to challenging men as well as having some Fathers Day fun. I have a special gift for all the men and there will be popcorn. It might be messy but it will be a fun way to honor dads.
Billy Graham once said, "A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed and yet the most valuable asset in our society." Don't let that happen in your home or in our church.
A Father is one of the greatest influences in a child's life. A father is often a child's first hero. I know mine was. I love celebrating Mother's Day, but since God's word instructs us to honor our fathers and our mother.... why not go all out to celebrate God's gift of a dad. One way to celebrate is to be in worship together.
Father's day is here! It's coming fast. Let's honor him. What are your plans!
