Pass It On

"Make them holy in the truth; Your word is truth. As you sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world." Vss. 17-18 (CEB)

Reading: John 17:1-26
Reflection by Tim Jarrell, Senior Pastor of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church

When I was in high school (in the 70's), my youth group performed the musical "Pass It On" by Kurt Kaiser. I played guitar and sang in our production. The title song made it into the UMC Hymnal released in 1989. I was always captivated by its closing lines: "l'll shout it from the mountain top; I want the world to know;
the Lord of love has come to me; I want to pass it on."

Jesus' prayer in today's Bible passage talks about passing the gospel message on from God the Father to the Son, from the Son to the disciples. From glory, to revelation, to prayers: in each of these the sequence is the same—Father to Son to disciples.

As Jesus continues praying, He knows the cross is in His near future, and acknowledges the resulting trials that will challenge the lives of His followers. Even with this knowledge, Jesus doesn't pray for the disciples to be delivered from the world and its trials. Why? Vs. 18 makes it clear, "As you sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world."

The disciples were sent and passed on the gospel. When they went forth and passed it on, others became Christ-followers who also passed it on all the way through the ages down to us!

When our musical team sang the last verse of "Pass It On," we would repeat the final chorus. This time after we sang, "I'll shout it from the mountain top," we would shout "PRAISE GOD!" We youth loved that part of the song. We shouted, not to be loud, but because we passionately wanted the world to know the Lord of love.

From Father to Son, to disciples, to Christ followers through the centuries, to us. Now it's our turn to "Pass It On"!

Prayer: Lord of love, I give thanks for those who came before me who were faithful in sharing the good news that enabled me to receive You into my life. May I, too, be faithful and pass it on. Amen

Action Point: Tell at least one person today why you said yes to following Christ.
