Two Ways to Learn

"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you" V. 26 (NIV)
Reading: John 14:22-31
Reflection by Wayne Williams
It's interesting to me that the teaching aspect of God's Holy Spirit seems to be twofold. On the one hand, the Spirit will remind us of everything Jesus has said and done. But on the other hand, the Spirit comes to indwell us to teach us "all things." That's a pretty broad scope!!
We need to know both all Jesus has said, done, and taught as recorded in the Scriptures. But we have another, broader need, and that is to know "all things." We are living our lives, and the Spirit is with us always, to teach us all things. Jesus never had a word to say about driving down Valley Mills Drive. But the Spirit teaches us all things. Jesus offered no advice concerning the internet, social media, or Netflix—yet the Spirit teaches us all things.
The question is: are we listening to the Spirit of the Living God? So often, I think we approach the Lord simply to be reminded of things past. Please hear me—I think this is legitimate. Our memories are frail and we do need Spirit-reminders! However, we also have a desperate need for the Living Spirit of God to teach us all things. And He does this while in close, personal, loving relationship with every follower of Jesus Christ.
Prayer: O Holy Spirit, teach me all things about how to live my life for the glory of Jesus Christ!
Action Point: Next time you are in your car, turn down the radio, and ask God's Spirit to speak directly to you.
